Is It Working?

That’s probably what most people think when they get a new product and start using it-wondering if their fine lines are diminished, brown spots are lighter or skin looks refreshed and dewy?

I have invested in enough products over the last 15 years or so to fight back the ravages of my younger sun days, but resisted using retinol products until now.

Maybe at the 10 years ago mark, I used Retin A because everyone else was trying it, and I couldn’t handle the flaking of my facial skin.  I was working full-time in sales where, it was hard to explain what was going on with my face when I met a new potential client.

I tried tri-luma and various other vitamin A based products, but always veered away because they were too irritating.

I don’t like to exfoliate either with harsh scrubs so, I probably wasn’t giving my products the best opportunity to work at the end of the day.

Vitamin A, retinols, tretonin and related, are used to encourage exfoliation and build collagen.  As people grow older the renewal process slows down so we need a little help.

I’ve been noticing more fine lines around my eyes, and a little bit of melasma on my cheek so I was starting to think about switching from my regimen of Kiehl’s Power Concentrate; a vitamin C based product which did wonders on lightening my skin.

But change is almost always good.

So, I got a bottle of True Vision Center’s retinol serum, at the 5x strength and have been alternating with other products.  It depends on how my skin is feeling at night – whether I was in the sun at all, or wore more make up than usual, felt tight etc.

What I’ve noticed is, on the nights I don’t use the retinol based serum, it feels like my other products are “doing something”.

And no flaking!

Prior to this, I’d put the product on, and they’d feel like nice comforting creams and I’d go to bed.

I have noticed after about two weeks of this alternating schedule, my fine lines around my eyes are smoothing out.

Will post an update in about a month.

Philosophical Philosophy Vitamin Super C Boost Powder

I read about this in Fitness magazine where the models tend to be tan.  I wish they would feature people who are not tan, after all, being tan as a sign of health is an outmoded notion that went out with the disco ball!

Anyway, I will credit my discovery of Philosphy’s Vitamin Super C Boost Powder to the mag.  It sparked my curiosity as I am a firm believer in the Power to the C! It’s my favorite antioxidant because it offers protection from free radicals and you can eat and apply it! Haha not the product silly!

This cool little powder comes in a medicine brown bottle with a tiny scoop.  Directions are to add a half to a full scoop which is like a 1/8 teaspoon to your favorite cream or serum in the morning.  I go for the full scoop and add it to my Kiehl’s Ultra Facial cream which I think is a pretty docile product. (I recommend it for sensitive skin because it is pretty blah on it’s own to me-I got it as a sample).

I have to admit it is fun to stir up your own concoctions-remember tea parties when you were 5 years old mixing various liquids for your imaginary libations?

Sensitive skin users probably want to use a half scoop-the product does give you a little flush of color on your cheeks.  When I used Skinceuticals CE Ferulic, I got a similar reaction but allover my face, so I think the full scoop for myself is the limit, and once a day.

I just like the idea of a little extra C, and if it helps fade some spots that will be a bonus!  The product doesn’t make a lot of claims.

Trying to upload photos but having trouble with the wordpress option—will try my own.

Kiehl’s vs Tretonin 10%

I’m not sure if it was from the Fraxel treatment, but post Fraxel, my face skin has been darker than my neck even though I wear sunscreen religiously on my face and not on my neck. I notice it more when I see a full body shot of me in the mirror–tan face even without make up, and paler neck, shoulder etc. skin.

I’ve been using the Power Line Concentrate from Kiehl’s (I”m on my third bottle) and have seen an overall lightening of my facial skin. I did a short round of Obaji which also helped.  I mention the Kiehl’s product because, my Korean friends who are skin fanatics starting commenting about the lightening after I used my first bottle of Kiehl’s.

Kiehl's Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution

I am now using the newest Kiehl’s promise to lighten dark spots product, Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution .  Just to test it, I put the Kiehl’s product using about a half dropper on my face and gently massaged in.  On my foot, I have a sun spot and I applied tretonin 10%.

Day 1, Jan 20,2012 Kiehls vs Tretonin 10%

Let’s see what happens-I’ve been using the product for about 10 days.
